Wooden door or aluminium door: which smart lock fits?

Mohammed Nazir |

Before you compare fingerprints, faces and cameras, there is one question that decides everything: what is your door made of? A lock built for a thick wooden door will not go into a slim aluminium frame, and a lock designed for an aluminium profile is the wrong shape for a solid wooden slab. Get the door right and the rest is just choosing features.

At Bab Al-Saif we keep two separate ranges for exactly this reason: smart locks for wooden doors and smart locks for metal and aluminium doors. Prices run from 25 KD to 85 KD, and our technicians fit the lock for 7–20 KD depending on the door. This guide shows you how to identify your door in about a minute, then gives you the models for each type.

How to tell what your door is

Stand at your door and do these four checks. They take longer to read than to do.

  • Tap it. A solid wooden door gives a dull, dense knock. An aluminium door sounds hollow and light, almost tinny.
  • Look at the open edge. A wooden door shows one thick, solid slab. An aluminium door shows a frame with visible joins, often with a panel or glass sitting inside it.
  • Try a fridge magnet. It sticks to a steel or iron door. It will not stick to aluminium. This is the quickest way to tell the two metals apart, and it matters because steel doors usually give you more room for the lock body than a thin aluminium profile does.
  • Look for a narrow flat strip. If the flat part of the door around the handle is only a few centimetres wide before it meets glass or a decorative panel, you are almost certainly looking at aluminium, and the lock panels have to fit inside that strip.

Not sure after all that? Send us a photo of the door from the front and a second photo of its open edge. We will tell you which models fit and which ones do not.

What the door type actually changes

Three things, in order of importance:

  • Where the lock body goes. A wooden door can be cut to take a deep lock body. An aluminium door is a hollow frame with a set profile width, so the lock body has to match that profile. This is the single most common reason a lock cannot be fitted.
  • How much flat surface there is. The front and back panels of the lock need a flat area to sit on. Wooden doors give you plenty. Aluminium doors with glass panels often give you a narrow strip and nothing more.
  • What the door faces. Wooden doors are usually inside doors: apartment entrances, bedrooms, offices. Aluminium is what Kuwait uses for kitchen doors, roof doors, villa side doors and shop fronts, which means sun, dust and humidity, so battery life and a front panel built for the weather start to matter.

Smart locks for wooden doors

These are the models we currently have for wooden doors. All of them open with a fingerprint and a key card as standard, and all except the S09 also take a PIN code.

Model Price What it adds Best for
F22 25 KD Phone app The straightforward choice for an apartment door
QL811 25–30 KD Phone app; the two versions use two different apps A second door, a rental or a small office
F11s 30 KD Phone app over Wi-Fi Managing users from anywhere, not just at the door
A9x 55 KD Face recognition, app over Bluetooth Hands-free entry; fits wooden and metal doors (only a few left)
A9pro 70 KD Face and palm recognition, Wi-Fi, video intercom A main entrance where you want to see who is outside
S09 85 KD Dual-camera face recognition, live video intercom, front panel built for humidity and water, two 6000 mAh batteries Doors that face the outside, on wood or metal

We also carry the M7 and DQ02 at 40 KD for wooden doors. Both are between shipments right now, so message us about availability before you plan around them.

Smart locks for aluminium doors

Five models fit aluminium doors. The lock body on each one is shaped for an aluminium profile rather than a thick slab, which is what makes the difference.

Model Price How it opens Power Availability
K9 32 KD Fingerprint, PIN, key card, app (Wi-Fi) Replaceable batteries In stock
J03 50 KD Face recognition, fingerprint, PIN, key card, app (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) Rechargeable battery Ask us about availability

The metal-door range also includes the A9x (55 KD) and the A9pro (70 KD) for steel and iron doors, and the R06 rim lock at 35 KD, which mounts on the surface of the door instead of inside it. For a full walkthrough of the aluminium side, including how to check your frame before you order, see our guide to smart locks for aluminium doors in Kuwait.

What if the door is glass, or slides?

Glass doors are their own category: there is no frame to cut into, so the lock clamps to the glass. We keep a smart lock for glass doors at 35 KD for shop fronts and glass office partitions. Sliding doors lock along a different axis from doors that swing, so check with us before ordering rather than after: send a photo of the door and the frame it slides into.

What every lock includes, whatever your door

Across both ranges, every smart lock we sell comes with backup keys, a USB emergency power port so you can open the door with a power bank if the battery runs flat, and space for up to 100 users. You are not paying more to get those basics on a more expensive model. What the higher prices buy is extra ways to open the door and, at the top, a camera.

Installation

Our technicians fit the lock for 7–20 KD. Where you land in that range depends on the door, not on which lock you chose: a frame that already has the right opening is quick, and a door that needs preparing takes longer. Tell us the door type when you order, or send a photo, and we will give you the figure before you pay. If you would rather do it yourself, our guide on how to install a smart lock walks through the steps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my door is aluminium or steel?

Hold a fridge magnet against it. A magnet sticks to steel and iron; it will not stick to aluminium. Both fall under our metal-door range, but the amount of room for the lock body is usually different, so it is worth knowing which one you have.

Can one smart lock work on both a wooden and an aluminium door?

A few can. The A9x and the S09 appear in both of our ranges, and the S09 is the model we suggest when the door faces the outside. Everything else is made for one door type. Send us a photo of the door and its edge and we will confirm rather than guess.

Is a smart lock cheaper for a wooden door?

Slightly. Wooden-door locks start at 25 KD (F22 and QL811); aluminium-door locks start at 32 KD (K9). Installation is 7–20 KD either way, and that depends on the door rather than the material.

My aluminium door has a glass panel. Does that rule out a smart lock?

Not by itself. What matters is how wide the flat metal strip around the handle is, because the lock panels have to sit on it. Measure that strip, or photograph it with a tape measure next to it, and send it over.

How much does a smart lock cost in total?

Lock plus installation, the total across our whole range works out between 32 KD and 105 KD. Our full breakdown of smart lock prices in Kuwait goes level by level, from an essential fingerprint lock to a video intercom.
