Choosing a work light
- Lumens tell you how bright, watts tell you how much it draws. The magnetic torch is rated 2 W and 250 lumens, which is plenty for an engine bay at arm's length; the 5 W flood light is the one for a whole room.
- Magnets and hooks beat holding it. Both hands free is the whole point of a work light, so the magnetic base and the rotating hook are the features that actually matter.
- Battery or mains. The flood light takes AA cells and the 3 W work light has its own battery, so neither needs a socket. The hand lamp runs off the mains through its own lead and takes a 60 W fitting.
- Keep one in the car. A 1.450 KD torch in the glovebox is what you want in your hand when a tyre goes at night.
