Open steel shelving for store rooms, kitchens, garages and shops. Right now the one rack we have on the floor is the heavy duty five-layer unit at 19.500 KD, 180 cm tall and 90 cm wide, and there are 77 of them in stock. The smaller racks on wheels and the kitchen units are between deliveries — if you need shelves behind a lockable door instead, the steel cupboards are well stocked.

Which shelving is right for you?

Out of stock at the moment: the three, four and five-layer racks on wheels, the kitchen and kitchen-cart racks, the stainless rack for a wash basin top and the single-sided supermarket display rack — ask us about availability.

Open shelves or a cupboard?

At five levels and full height these are the same piece of furniture with and without doors, so the choice comes down to three things.

• Price per level. The open rack is 19.500 KD for five levels. The nearest enclosed equivalent, the five-shelf file cabinet, is 45 KD — you are paying about 25 KD for the doors.
• Width. Both are tall, but the cabinet is 900 mm wide against the rack's 90 cm, so they cover about the same wall. The rack is 45 cm deep and the cabinet 400 mm, which is close enough that neither will take a box the other will not.
• Dust and eyes. Open shelving is faster to use and cheaper to fill. If what is on the shelf is dusty, untidy or not yours to leave out, you want the doors.

Buying tips

• Measure the height of what you are storing, not just the shelf. Five levels over 180 cm gives you roughly 36 cm a level before you lose any to the frame. Paint tins, crates and water bottles all fit; a stacked carton often does not.
• Heavy things go at the bottom. It is obvious and it is still the main reason open racks tip. Load the bottom two levels first and the unit will stay put.
• Against a wall, not freestanding, in a room people walk through. A full-height open rack in the middle of a store room is a different proposition from one that has a wall behind it.
• Buying several for one wall? Each unit is 90 cm wide, so three of them cover 2.7 metres. Measure the wall first and contact us for quantities.
• Need it to lock? Open shelving cannot. The single-door cupboard with five shelves at 23.750 KD is the cheapest way to get shelves behind a lock — see steel cupboards and lockers.
