Rivet sizes and prices

  • 3.2 mm: 3.2 x 6 mm is 1.250 KD in silver, 1.500 KD in white or beige; 3.2 x 10 mm is 1.350 KD.
  • 4.0 mm: 4.0 x 10 mm is 1.750 KD, 4.0 x 16 mm is 1.250 KD, 4.0 x 19 mm is 1.500 KD, and 4.0 x 12 mm and 4.0 x 25 mm are 2.000 KD.
  • 4.8 mm: 4.8 x 16 mm and 4.8 x 19 mm are 1.500 KD; 4.8 x 25 mm is 2.250 KD, the longest rivet here.

Picking the right rivet

  • The first number is the shank diameter, the second is the length. Drill the hole to the shank size: 3.2 mm, 4.0 mm or 4.8 mm.
  • Length is set by the grip. Add the thicknesses of the sheets you are joining and allow about 1.5 times that again for the rivet to form its head. Two 1 mm sheets take a 6 mm rivet; a 10 mm sandwich wants 16 mm or more.
  • Why blind rivets. They set from one side, so you can fix a panel where you cannot reach behind it. That is the job no screw and nut does.
  • Hand riveter or drill adapter? The hand riveter costs less and needs no power. The drill adapter is quicker past about twenty rivets and much easier on 4.8 mm, which is hard work by hand.
  • Rivet nuts are a different thing. A rivet nut leaves a threaded insert behind, so you can bolt into thin sheet and unbolt it again later. That needs the rivet nut adapter, not a plain riveter.

FAQs

What size drill bit do I need for a blind rivet?

The same as the rivet shank: a 3.2 mm bit for a 3.2 mm rivet, 4.0 mm for 4.0 mm, 4.8 mm for 4.8 mm. A hole that is loose by half a millimetre will not pull up tight. See drill bits.

Can I use a cordless drill instead of a rivet gun?

Yes. The drill rivet adapter at 3.500 KD covers 2.4 mm to 4.8 mm rivets, weighs 0.4 kg and is 220 x 35 mm, so it fits any ordinary cordless drill chuck.

What colours do the rivets come in?

Silver as standard across all three diameters, plus white and beige in 3.2 x 6 mm and 4.0 x 10 mm at 1.500 KD and 2.000 KD, which saves painting the heads on a finished panel.
