Welding machine or soldering iron? Kuwait prices from 1.600 KD

Mohammed Nazir |

An arc welding machine at Bab Al-Saif is 25.500 KD for the 130 A inverter, and its own spec sheet lists an electrode holder with cable, an earth clamp with cable, a wire brush and a helmet in the box — so a 5 kg box of 2.5 mm rods at 2.800 KD is the only thing you have to add, and a working set-up is 28.300 KD. If the job is a plastic pipe or a circuit board, the machine is a different one and much cheaper: 8.500 KD for a pipe welder and 1.600 KD for a soldering iron. This page sorts out which of the three you are actually looking for.

Three different machines get the same word

In English they split into welding, pipe welding and soldering. In Kuwait all three are asked for with the same Arabic word, which is why people arrive at the counter expecting a 25.500 KD machine when the job needs a 1.600 KD one, or the other way round.

Machine The job it is for What its record states Price
Soldering iron Wire, terminals, a connector, a board 40 W, 60 W and 100 W from 1.600 KD
Auto-feed soldering gun The same work with the tin fed from the handle 60 W, 220-240 V, 480-600 °C, tin wire 0.8-1.2 mm 2.250 KD
Soldering gun with an LCD read-out Soldering where the tip temperature matters 120 W, pistol grip, 480-600 °C, 232 x 210 x 40 mm 5.250 KD
Plastic pipe welder Joining PVC and PP-R pipe with heated sockets 800 W, 230 V at 50 Hz from 8.500 KD
PP-R socket welder, six sizes Plumbing runs in several pipe diameters 2000 W, 230 V, sockets 20, 25, 32, 40, 50 and 63 mm, thermostat 0-300 °C 12.000 KD
Arc (MMA) inverter, 130 A Steel: a gate, a bracket, angle iron, rebar 15-130 A, electrode 1.6-3.2 mm, 130 A at a 30% duty cycle, 75 V no-load 25.500 KD
Arc (MMA) inverter, 160 A The same work with a wider rod choice 15-160 A, electrode 1.6-4.0 mm, 160 A at a 30% duty cycle, 78 V no-load 32.500 KD
MIG wire-feed machine Wire fed continuously from the machine instead of changing rods 230 V, 60% duty cycle, power factor 0.93 40.000 KD

A fourth arc machine, the MMA machine at 16.500 KD, states 3900 W and a 60% load rate at 220 V. Its own title and its own spec sheet disagree about the current it delivers, so this page gives it no amperage at all and does not place it on the list above. If current is what you are choosing on, the 130 A and 160 A inverters are the two whose records state it plainly.

What a working arc set-up costs, end to end

This is the question behind most of the searches, and the answer is shorter than people expect because the 130 A inverter arrives with most of the kit. Its spec sheet lists an electrode holder with cable, an earth clamp with cable, a wire brush and a helmet as what is in the box.

Item Price
130 A MMA inverter, with holder, clamp, brush and helmet 25.500 KD
Welding rods, 2.5 x 300 mm, 5 kg box 2.800 KD
Minimum to strike an arc 28.300 KD
Magnetic welding holder, 25 lb 0.450 KD
Auto-darkening helmet, in place of the supplied one 4.500 KD
With both 33.250 KD

The magnetic holder is the 0.450 KD item people leave out and then wish they had: it holds two pieces of steel together magnetically so both your hands are free for the rod. The 25 lb version is 0.450 KD and the 50 lb one 0.650 KD.

On masks, three are listed and the difference between them is how they are held and what the glass does. The hand mask at 1.500 KD has a 108 x 50 x 3 mm glass panel and an impact-resistant shell; the head-worn mask at 2.000 KD has the same glass on a movable panel that lifts; the auto-darkening helmet at 4.500 KD states optical grade 1/1/1/2, a 93 x 43 mm window and power from a solar cell plus a replaceable lithium cell. All three are priced alongside the rest of the kit in what a safety kit costs in Kuwait.

Consumables and the bits that wear out

Soldering: the other thing the same word means

A soldering iron joins wire and electronics with tin, not steel with an arc, and it is a different shelf and a different price bracket. If you are here because you typed the Arabic word and got welding machines, this is probably the section you wanted.

Tool Rating Price
Soldering iron 40 W 1.600 KD
Soldering iron 60 W 1.900 KD
Soldering iron 100 W 2.250 KD
Auto-feed soldering gun 60 W, 480-600 °C 2.250 KD
Soldering gun with LCD read-out 120 W, 480-600 °C 5.250 KD

The fitment point worth knowing before you buy either gun. Both guns state they take tin wire of 0.8 to 1.2 mm. The soldering wire here is sold in 1 mm, 1.25 mm and 2 mm, all at 0.750 KD a 75 g reel — so the 1 mm reel is the one inside both guns' stated range. The 1.25 mm and the 2 mm sit above it, and they are for hand soldering with an iron rather than for feeding through a gun.

As a general point about soldering irons rather than a figure from any record here, the wattage describes how quickly the tip recovers its heat rather than how big a joint it will make: 40 W at 1.600 KD for wiring and electronics, 100 W at 2.250 KD for a heavy terminal or a thick wire that draws the heat away faster.

Questions people actually ask

How much is a welding machine in Kuwait?

25.500 KD for the 130 A MMA inverter, which its record says comes with an electrode holder, an earth clamp, a wire brush and a helmet. The 160 A is 32.500 KD, the MIG wire-feed machine 40.000 KD, and there is a further MMA machine at 16.500 KD. For plastic pipe rather than steel, 8.500 KD and up.

What rod does a 130 A machine take?

Its record states 1.6 to 3.2 mm electrodes. The rods stocked here are 2.5 mm by 300 mm, 2.800 KD for a 5 kg box, which is inside that range. The 160 A machine states 1.6 to 4.0 mm, so it takes the same rod and thicker ones as well.

What does a duty cycle of 30% mean on a welding machine?

The percentage is a standard rating rather than anything specific to these machines: it is the share of a ten-minute period the machine is rated to weld at its maximum current, with the remainder of the period for cooling. Both inverters state 30% at their top figure — 130 A and 160 A — and the MIG machine and the 16.500 KD MMA machine both state 60%. Below maximum current a machine can run for longer; the figure is quoted at the top of the range.

How much is a plastic pipe welding machine?

From 8.500 KD for the 800 W PVC and pipeline welder at 230 V. The 2000 W PP-R machine at 12.000 KD is the one that carries six heating sockets — 20, 25, 32, 40, 50 and 63 mm — and a 0 to 300 °C thermostat, so it covers a whole plumbing run rather than one pipe size.

How much is a soldering iron in Kuwait?

1.600 KD for 40 W, 1.900 KD for 60 W and 2.250 KD for 100 W on one listing. An auto-feed soldering gun is 2.250 KD and one with an LCD temperature read-out is 5.250 KD. Solder wire is 0.750 KD a 75 g reel.

Do you sell MIG welding wire?

The MIG machine is listed at 40.000 KD. The wire on the shelf is aluminium alloy at 1 mm — 2.250 KD for 0.5 kg and 23.000 KD for 6 kg — plus the 2.5 mm stick electrodes for the MMA machines. Ask at the counter for anything else before you order the machine, because the wire is the part that decides what you can run.

Which welding glass fits the hand mask?

Both of the plain masks state a glass size of 108 x 50 x 3 mm — the 1.500 KD hand mask and the 2.000 KD head-worn one with the movable panel. The 4.500 KD auto-darkening helmet is a different format: a 93 x 43 mm window with an optical grade of 1/1/1/2.

Also useful: welding machines and accessories for the whole range, electrical hand tools for the wiring side of a soldering job, angle grinder prices and disc sizes for cutting and dressing the steel before you weld it, and what a safety kit costs in Kuwait for the masks, gloves and boots.
