There are three honest answers depending on what you are furnishing.

- Allen and torx keys. A 9-piece long-arm allen key set is 1.250 KD, a folding 8-piece set 2.000 KD, and a 9-piece torx or star-bit set 1.250 KD. Flat-pack furniture is held together with these.

- Sledge hammer, 2.500 KD for 2 lb or 3.500 KD for 4 lb. For masonry and for stakes, not for anything you want to keep.

- Magnetic spirit level, 2.250 KD for 40 cm. Longer is more accurate over a run: 60 cm is 3.000 KD, 80 cm is 3.750 KD and 100 cm is 4.500 KD. A 40 cm level on a 2 m shelf tells you about 40 cm of it.
- Self-levelling line laser, 15 m range, 7.000 KD. Worth it the first time you hang six frames on one line, or tile a wall. Not worth it to hang one picture.
- Laser distance meter, 100 m, 9.000 KD. For room sizes, quotes and areas, measured alone instead of with someone holding the other end.

Buying tips that save real money
- Buy the size range, not the piece count. An 8-piece spanner set covering 6 to 22 mm is more useful than a bigger set that stops at 17 mm. Household and car fittings in Kuwait sit mostly between 8 and 24 mm.
- Spanners or sockets? Open and ring spanners reach into corners. A socket on a ratchet is faster on anything you can come at straight on, which is why car work starts with sockets.
- Hammer handles. Wooden handles are lighter and cheaper; fibreglass absorbs more of the shock over a long job. We stock both in hammers and mallets.
