How much does a cordless drill cost in Kuwait?

Mohammed Nazir |

A cordless drill in Kuwait costs from 11.500 KD. That is the price at Bab Al-Saif in Shuwaikh for a 16.8 V drill supplied with two batteries, 2100 rpm and a rated 60 N.m of torque, and we have 56 of them on the shelf. Below that there is a 4 V cordless screwdriver at 9.500 KD for furniture and small screws; above it the range runs to 70.000 KD for an 18 V 13 mm drill with two batteries.

Fifteen cordless drills, drivers and hammer drills are buyable today. Here is every one of them with its price, then the four numbers that actually decide which one you should take home: voltage, torque, chuck size and whether the motor is brushless.

Voltage: what 4 V, 12 V, 16.8 V, 20 V and 21 V actually buy you

Voltage is the first thing on every cordless drill box and the first thing most people read wrongly. It is not a quality rating. It describes the battery pack, and a higher figure usually means a heavier tool as well as a stronger one.

  • 4 V, 9.500 KD. A screwdriver, not a drill. It drives screws into flat-pack furniture, switch plates and cabinet hinges, and it fits in a drawer. It will not make holes in a wall.
  • 12 V, 30.000 KD to 35.000 KD. Light enough to hold overhead all afternoon, which is why trade 12 V tools exist at all. Everything we hold at 12 V today is a trade tool rather than a budget one: a hammer drill at 30.000 KD, a drill driver at 33.500 KD and a 13 mm rotary hammer at 35.000 KD. If you want 12 V lightness for less, ask us: we have a compact 12 V drill driver on the showroom floor that is not listed on the website.
  • 16.8 V, 11.500 KD. The lowest-priced full drill we sell, with two batteries, 2100 rpm and 60 N.m. If one drill has to do everything in a flat, this is the one to compare the others against.
  • 20 V and 21 V, 13.500 KD to 40.000 KD. The working range. Bigger holes in wood, longer screws, a full afternoon of work rather than one job. The 21 V with accessories at 13.500 KD and the brushless 13 mm at 16.450 KD are the two that leave the shelf fastest.
  • 18 V trade tools, 45.000 KD to 70.000 KD. Built for someone who picks the tool up every day of the week. If you are a technician charging for your time, this is where to look.

Note the overlap: a 12 V trade drill at 33.500 KD costs more than a 21 V drill at 13.500 KD. Voltage and price are not the same axis. A higher voltage from a budget range and a lower voltage from a trade range are different purchases for different buyers.

What the torque number means, and when 60 N.m is enough

Torque is twisting force, printed in newton metres. It is the figure that tells you whether the drill will keep turning when the screw gets tight, instead of stopping and slipping its clutch.

Two figures are published in our range. The 16.8 V and 21 V drills are rated 60 N.m, at 11.500 KD and 13.500 KD. The brushless 13 mm drill is rated 80 N.m, at 16.450 KD. For furniture, shelves, curtain rails and ordinary wood screws, 60 N.m is not a limitation. You notice the difference when you are driving long screws into hardwood, running a 25 mm flat bit through a joist, or using a hole saw, because those are the jobs where the bit grabs and the motor has to push through it.

Where a product page does not publish a torque figure, we have left it out rather than estimate one. Ask us and we will read the plate on the unit in the showroom.

Brushless or brushed, in plain terms

A brushed motor uses carbon brushes that press against the spinning part to pass current through it. A brushless motor does not have them; the switching is electronic instead. That is the mechanical difference, and it is why brushless tools cost more.

What you can check for yourself on our pages is what the extra money comes with. The brushless 20 V 13 mm drill is 16.450 KD and rated 80 N.m. The brushed 21 V drill is 13.500 KD and rated 60 N.m. So brushless here is 2.950 KD more for 20 N.m more, plus the 13 mm chuck. A second brushless 13 mm drill and a 21 V 13 mm model with 3000 mAh batteries are both between shipments at the moment.

Chuck size: 10 mm or 13 mm

The chuck is the three-jaw grip at the nose, and its number is the largest bit shank it will hold. A 13 mm chuck takes everything a 10 mm chuck takes and more, which matters for flat wood bits, hole saws and large masonry bits.

Four tools here state 13 mm: the brushless drill at 16.450 KD, the 20 V drill at 19.450 KD, the 12 V rotary hammer at 35.000 KD and the 18 V trade drill at 70.000 KD. If you already own hole saws or 20 mm and 25 mm wood bits, start with those. If your bits are all 6 mm and 8 mm, chuck size is not your deciding factor.

Drill, impact drill, hammer drill or rotary hammer?

Four names, one honest distinction: does the tool only rotate, or does it also punch forward while it rotates?

  • Plain drill driver. Rotation only. Wood, metal, plastic, and driving screws. From 9.500 KD for the 4 V screwdriver and 11.500 KD for the 16.8 V drill.
  • Impact or hammer drill. Rotation plus a rapid forward hammering, with an ordinary round-shank bit held in the chuck. This is what gets you through block and plaster. Cordless hammer drills here are 29.500 KD, 30.000 KD and 40.000 KD, and the 18 V trade impact drill is 51.500 KD.
  • Rotary hammer. A heavier blow and, on the SDS pattern, a bit that locks into the nose rather than being gripped by jaws. This is the tool for anchor holes in structural concrete. The cordless one here is 35.000 KD; the corded models are in electric drills and rotary hammers.

The rule of thumb for Kuwait housing: plaster and hollow block give way to an impact drill. Poured concrete ceilings and columns want a rotary hammer, and trying to do them with a plain drill costs you the bit rather than saving you the money.

Budget for the bits, not just the drill

A drill with no bits is half a purchase. From drill bits and hole saws, at today's prices:

  • Masonry drill shank, 6 × 100 mm, 0.150 KD
  • Concrete drill bits, 0.250 KD for 6 × 100 mm, 0.450 KD for 8 × 120 mm, 0.650 KD for 10 × 120 mm
  • Tile and glass drill bits, 0.500 KD for 5 mm up to 1.150 KD for 12 mm
  • Flat wood bits, 0.500 KD for 6 mm to 12 mm and 0.700 KD for 25 mm
  • HSS twist drill bit set, 6 pieces, 1.150 KD; a heavy-duty HSS set is 2.750 KD
  • SDS-plus hammer bits, from 0.250 KD for 6 × 160 mm
  • Bi-metal hole saws, 20 mm to 83 mm, 0.750 KD to 2.000 KD; an 11-piece hole saw set is 3.000 KD and a 16-piece set is 2.750 KD
  • Step drill or unibit set, 3 pieces, 2.750 KD

Driver bits and a spare 13 mm chuck sit in power tool accessories from 0.150 KD.

What is out of stock today, and we would rather say so

These are listed but not buyable as we write, so no price is quoted for them: the 12 V and 21 V drill-with-108-piece-accessory-kit bundles, the 16.8 V and 21 V cordless impact drills, the 21 V 13 mm drill with 3000 mAh batteries, a second brushless 13 mm drill, and the 28-piece and 55-piece cordless screwdriver bit sets. Message us with the one you wanted and we will tell you where the shipment is rather than leaving you to refresh the page.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a cordless drill in Kuwait?

From 11.500 KD for a 16.8 V drill with two batteries, 2100 rpm and 60 N.m. A 4 V cordless screwdriver is 9.500 KD, 20 V and 21 V drills run from 13.500 KD to 19.450 KD, cordless hammer drills are 29.500 KD to 40.000 KD, a 12 V cordless rotary hammer is 35.000 KD, and 18 V trade drills are 45.000 KD to 70.000 KD.

Which voltage cordless drill should I buy for home use?

For an apartment, 16.8 V. The 16.8 V drill at 11.500 KD comes with two batteries and covers shelves, curtain tracks, picture hooks and furniture. Go to 20 V or 21 V, from 13.500 KD, if you want bigger holes in wood and longer sessions rather than single jobs. The 12 V tools we hold online are trade models at 30.000 KD and above.

What does 60 N.m mean on a drill?

Newton metres measure twisting force, which is how hard the drill keeps turning when a screw tightens. Our 16.8 V and 21 V drills are rated 60 N.m, which is enough for furniture, shelves and ordinary wood screws. The brushless 13 mm drill at 16.450 KD is rated 80 N.m, and you notice that on long screws in hardwood and on hole saws.

Is a brushless drill worth the extra money?

In our range the brushless 13 mm drill is 16.450 KD against 13.500 KD for the brushed 21 V, so 2.950 KD more, for 80 N.m instead of 60 N.m and a 13 mm chuck instead of 10 mm. If you want the larger chuck and the higher torque figure anyway, you are paying for those and the motor comes with them.

Can a cordless drill drill into concrete?

Into plaster and hollow block, yes, with a hammer or impact drill and a masonry bit, and those are 29.500 KD to 51.500 KD here. For anchor holes in poured concrete use a rotary hammer: the cordless one is 35.000 KD, or see the corded models in electric drills and rotary hammers.

Do cordless drills come with two batteries?

Most of ours do, and the product page says so where they do. Thirteen of the fifteen tools listed above are supplied with two batteries, so one charges while you work.
