A hammer at Bab Al-Saif starts at 0.500 KD for a 200 gram machinist hammer, and the dearest hand hammer we list is a 4 lb sledge at 3.500 KD. Six head shapes cover almost every job a house or a workshop produces, and the one most people should own first is a 450 gram claw hammer at 1.000 KD.
This page matches head shape to job, gives every weight and price we list, and settles the word itself: in Kuwait "hammer" is also what people call three different machines, and those are on a different page.
Which head for which job
| Hammer | The head | What it is for | Weights listed | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Machinist hammer | Square face, wedge peen | Metalwork, punches, chisels, tapping a joint together | 200 g, 300 g, 500 g, 1000 g | 0.500 KD |
| Claw hammer | Flat face, split claw | Nails in and nails out. The one household hammer | 225 g (8 oz), 450 g (16 oz), 560 g (20 oz) | 0.750 KD |
| Ball pein hammer | Flat face, rounded ball | Shaping metal, setting rivets, rounding over a pin | 450 g (16 oz) | 1.000 KD |
| Rubber mallet | Solid rubber | Tiles, paving, furniture joints, anything you do not want to mark | 225 g (8 oz), 450 g (16 oz), 675 g (24 oz) | 1.000 KD |
| Stoning hammer | Heavy square face, chisel peen | Block, stone and masonry, and driving a cold chisel | 1000 g, 1500 g, 2000 g | 1.500 KD |
| Sledge hammer | Two heavy flat faces, long handle | Breaking up, driving stakes, demolition by hand | 2 lb, 4 lb | 2.500 KD |
One more sits in the same section and is not a hammer: a 600 gram hatchet at 1.500 KD, for splitting rather than striking.
Every weight and every price
Hammers are priced by head weight, and the step is small at the light end. Between 200 and 560 grams, going up one size costs 0.250 KD or less on every listing here. Above one kilogram the step is 0.500 KD or more, and from a 2 lb to a 4 lb sledge it is a full 1.000 KD.
| Hammer | Handle | Weights and prices |
|---|---|---|
| Machinist | Wood | 200 g 0.500 KD, 300 g 0.750 KD, 500 g 0.950 KD, 1000 g 1.500 KD |
| Machinist | Fibreglass | 200 g 0.750 KD, 300 g 0.850 KD, 500 g 1.000 KD, 1000 g 1.500 KD |
| Claw | Wood | 225 g 0.750 KD, 450 g 1.000 KD, 560 g 1.250 KD |
| Claw | Fibreglass | 225 g 0.850 KD, 560 g 1.250 KD |
| Claw, second listing | Fibreglass | 225 g 0.950 KD, 450 g 1.250 KD |
| Rubber mallet | Wood | 225 g 1.000 KD, 450 g 1.250 KD, 675 g 1.500 KD |
| Stoning | Wood | 1000 g 1.500 KD, 1500 g 2.000 KD |
| Stoning, second listing | Wood | 1000 g 1.750 KD, 1500 g 2.500 KD, 2000 g 3.000 KD |
| Sledge | Wood | 2 lb 2.500 KD, 4 lb 3.500 KD |
Three single-weight listings sit outside those ranges: a 450 gram industrial rubber mallet at 1.500 KD, a 35 mm rubber hammer at 1.500 KD, and a 25 mm British-pattern claw hammer at 1.500 KD.
Wood handle or fibreglass?
At the same head weight, fibreglass costs 0.050 to 0.250 KD more than wood on every pair we list: 0.500 against 0.750 on the 200 gram machinist, 0.750 against 0.850 on the 300 gram, 0.950 against 1.000 on the 500 gram, and 0.750 against 0.850 on the 225 gram claw. At 1000 grams both machinist hammers are 1.500 KD and the difference disappears.
A wooden handle can be replaced when it splits and a fibreglass one cannot, which is the honest argument for wood. A fibreglass handle will not loosen in a hot store room, which is the honest argument against it in Kuwait, where a hammer left in a villa garage in July is sitting in air that dries a wooden handle out.
Cold chisels, from 0.750 KD
A stoning hammer and a cold chisel are bought together. The chisel is held against the work and struck; the hammer never touches the surface.
- Flat cold chisel, 22 x 16 x 250 mm, 0.750 KD, or 24 x 18 x 300 mm, 1.000 KD
- Cold chisel, 0.950 KD, and a concrete chisel, 0.950 KD
- Pointed cold chisel, 1.000 KD
These are metal and masonry chisels. Wood chisels are not part of the chisels range.
"Hammer" is also three machines, and they are not on this page
Search "hammer" in Kuwait and more than half the results are powered. The three are easy to keep apart once you have seen them side by side:
- An impact or hammer drill taps as the bit turns, takes ordinary masonry bits in a normal chuck, and is for wall plugs and shelf fixings. From 12.000 KD.
- A rotary hammer drives the bit with a piston, takes SDS-Plus bits, and is for repeated concrete work and light chiselling. From 17.450 KD.
- A demolition hammer only hammers. It does not drill. The 1700 W machine is 45.000 KD.
Prices and the full comparison are in our guide to hammer drill machine prices in Kuwait, and the machines themselves are in electric drills and rotary hammers. Note that a rotary hammer's chisels are SDS-Plus point and flat chisels, which fit the machine and not a hand hammer.
What a Kuwait job needs
- Villa walls are block and concrete, not stud. A claw hammer and a nail will not hang anything on them. That is a drill, a plug and a screw, and the hammer's job is the chisel work around it.
- Tiled floors and a rubber mallet. Bedding a tile, seating a paver or closing a furniture joint are all jobs where a steel face leaves a mark and 1.000 KD of rubber does not.
- A 1000 gram stoning hammer at 1.500 KD and a 0.750 KD flat chisel is the pair for chasing a cable run or taking off a damaged tile, and it comes to 2.250 KD.
- Weight is the thing to try by hand. A 560 gram claw hammer drives a nail in fewer blows than a 225 gram one, and tires you faster on a ceiling. Both are on the counter in Shuwaikh.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a hammer in Kuwait?
From 0.500 KD for a 200 gram machinist hammer with a wooden handle. A 450 gram claw hammer is 1.000 KD, a 1000 gram stoning hammer is 1.500 KD, and a 4 lb sledge hammer is 3.500 KD. The range is in hammers.
What weight hammer should I buy?
For general household use, 450 grams (16 oz) in a claw hammer. Go to 560 grams if you drive long nails into timber, and down to 225 grams for small pins and tacks. For masonry work the useful weights are 1000 to 2000 grams in a stoning hammer.
What is a claw hammer used for?
Driving nails with the flat face and pulling them with the split claw. It is the hammer most households should own first, at 0.750 KD for 225 grams up to 1.250 KD for 560 grams.
What is a machinist hammer?
A square-faced hammer with a wedge-shaped peen, made for metalwork and for striking punches and chisels. It starts at 0.500 KD for 200 grams and runs to 1000 grams at 1.500 KD.
What is a ball pein hammer for?
Working metal rather than driving nails. The round ball spreads and rounds rivet heads and shapes sheet; the flat face does the striking. Ours is 450 grams at 1.000 KD.
What is a rubber mallet used for?
Striking something you do not want to dent: tiles, pavers, furniture joints, a car trim panel. Three weights, 225 grams at 1.000 KD, 450 grams at 1.250 KD and 675 grams at 1.500 KD.
Is a hammer drill the same as a hammer?
No. A hammer drill is a machine that rotates and taps a bit at the same time, from 12.000 KD, and a rotary hammer from 17.450 KD drives the bit with a piston. A hand hammer strikes. The machines are compared in our hammer drill price guide.
Which hammer and chisel break tiles or concrete?
A stoning hammer from 1.500 KD with a flat cold chisel from 0.750 KD or a concrete chisel at 0.950 KD. For more than a few square metres by hand, a demolition hammer at 45.000 KD is the machine answer.
