Office chairs and desks in Kuwait: what to buy and what it costs

Mohammed Nazir |

An office chair at Bab Al-Saif in Shuwaikh starts at 12.450 KD and an office desk starts at 13.950 KD, so a working pair starts at 26.400 KD. The height-adjustable desk chairs sit between 19.500 KD and 32.000 KD, and the range runs up to a 120.000 KD leather reception set.

The decision is not really about price. It is about four numbers: the height of your desk, the seat height of the chair, the weight the chair is rated to carry, and what is under it — castors, a fixed sled or a stacking frame. Get those four right and the chair fits the person and the room. This guide sets out all of them with the figures from our own product records.

Desk height against chair height: the number nobody checks

Every desk we sell is 75 cm high — the folding table at 13.950 KD, the folding writing desk at 16.500 KD and the melamine workstation at 60.000 KD are all 750 mm to the top.

So the chair has to put a seat somewhere under that. The mesh chair at 19.500 KD adjusts its seat between 43 cm and 52 cm. The 300 mm nylon-base chair at 28.000 KD starts from a 43 cm seat and adjusts upward from there. Against a 75 cm desk top that leaves 23 cm to 32 cm of clearance between seat and desk.

Two things follow from the arithmetic:

  • A fixed-height chair cannot be matched to a desk. The 12.450 KD stacking chair has no gas lift at all, and the 42.450 KD sled-base chair has none either. Whatever height they are is the height you get, which is why both are meeting-room chairs rather than desk chairs.
  • A counter is not a desk. A shop till, a pharmacy counter or a drafting board stands far higher than 75 cm, and an ordinary chair with a 43–52 cm seat will not reach it. That is the whole reason the cashier chair exists: its overall height runs 113 to 134 cm.

Measure the underside of your desk, not the top, if it has a drawer unit or a cross rail. The melamine workstation at 60.000 KD comes with a mobile drawer cabinet, and that cabinet decides how much of the 600 mm depth is left for knees.

What a weight rating actually means

A chair's weight rating is the maximum load the manufacturer states for the seat, the gas lift and the base together. It is a figure about the chair, not about the person, and on this range it takes exactly three values:

  • 120 kg. The mesh chair at 19.500 KD and the 300 mm nylon-base chair at 28.000 KD.
  • 150 kg. The 320 mm nylon-base chair at 32.000 KD and the full-mesh chair at 69.000 KD.
  • Not stated. The 12.450 KD stacking chair, the 42.450 KD sled-base chair and the 21.500 KD gaming chair carry no rating in their product records.

Where no figure is recorded we are not going to invent one. Ask us at the counter and we will read the carton. A 30 kg difference between 120 kg and 150 kg is also a difference in the base and the gas lift, which is part of why the 32.000 KD chair sits on a 320 mm base where the 28.000 KD one sits on a 300 mm base.

Castors, a fixed sled, or stacking?

This is what separates a 12.450 KD chair from a 49.950 KD one, and it has nothing to do with quality.

Base What it does Where it goes Example price
Stacking, chrome legs No wheels, no height change; chairs stack against a wall A room with a second job — training room, majlis, shop seating 12.450 KD
Cantilever sled Continuous chrome frame, no wheels, no swivel; stays where it is put Round a conference table, where chairs drifting out of line looks bad 42.450 KD
Five-star base on castors Rolls, swivels 360°, adjusts height on a gas lift Anywhere one person sits at one desk 19.500 KD
Castors with a tall gas lift Rolls and swivels at counter height, 113–134 cm overall Tills, counters, labs, workshops 49.950 KD

Castors want a hard floor or a short-pile carpet. On the deep carpet common in Kuwaiti villa offices, a dual-wheel castor is the one that still rolls — the 19.500 KD chair lists dual-wheel castors on a 5-star chrome base. Stacking chairs do the opposite job: they never roll out of line, and a room clears in a minute.

What is the footrest ring on a cashier chair for?

When a seat is raised to 113–134 cm to reach a counter, the feet no longer reach the floor. The chrome ring around the column is where they go instead, and on the 49.950 KD cashier chair that ring adjusts in height independently of the seat, so a 160 cm cashier and a 185 cm one can share the same chair on the same shift.

The rest of the figures on that chair, for anyone specifying seating for a shop: W 59 × D 61 cm, padded fabric, iron frame, manual gas lift, tilt, castors and swivel, 10 kg gross weight, and it ships in a 100 × 100 × 100 cm box. Its record states independent certification to ANSI/BIFMA X5, EN 1335, BS 5852 and CE — the only chair in this range with certification listed, which matters if you are tendering for a government or corporate fit-out. Other colours are available to order.

A separate chair also has a footrest, and it is a different thing: the 69.000 KD full-mesh chair has a footrest that slides out from under the seat and folds away. That is a desk chair with a leg rest, not a counter chair.

Measure the wall before you order reception seating

Reception furniture fails on wall length, not on floor area. The black leather set gives you the three numbers to work with:

  • Armchair, 68 × 72 × 84 cm, 28.000 KD. Two of them side by side need 136 cm of wall.
  • Three-seater sofa, 179 × 72 × 84 cm, 45.000 KD. It needs 179 cm of clear wall, and 179 cm is wider than many villa reception alcoves.
  • Two armchairs plus the sofa as one set, 96.000 KD. Bought separately those three pieces are 101.000 KD.

Everything in that set is 72 cm deep and 84 cm high, so the depth is what you check against a corridor, and the 84 cm height is what you check against a window sill. The brown set at 120.000 KD is the same geometry — two 68 cm armchairs and one 179 cm sofa — in brown.

For a waiting area where people stand for two minutes rather than sit for twenty, a row of 12.450 KD stacking chairs seats far more people per metre of wall than a sofa does, and stacks away when the room is needed for something else.

Desks: three sizes, three jobs

Desk Open size Load Price from
Folding table desk 120 × 60 × 75 cm 80 kg on the top 13.950 KD
Folding writing desk on wheels 100 × 50 × 75 cm Not stated 16.500 KD
Workstation desk with drawer cabinet 1200 W × 600 D × 750 H mm 25 mm melamine top 60.000 KD

The 120 cm folding desk folds flat but is still 120 cm long folded, which is the measurement to take to the car rather than the open footprint. The 100 × 50 cm writing desk is the one that fits a bedroom corner in an apartment. The 60.000 KD workstation is a fixed desk: a 25 mm melamine top on iron legs with a mobile melamine drawer cabinet, in brown or white. All three are in office desks and tables.

Power at the desk, without a cable across the floor

Two recessed sockets drop into a desk or a meeting table so the extension lead disappears:

  • Flip-up desktop socket, 11.950 KD. Three universal outlets plus USB-A and USB-C, 15 A at 250 V, IP44, stainless steel and PC shell with tamper-resistant shutters. CE, RoHS, TÜV, LVD and EMC listed.
  • Hydraulic pop-up socket, 21.450 KD. Four outlets plus USB-A and USB-C, 15 A at 115–250 V to a maximum of 2500 W, IP44, aluminium body, thick copper contacts and a 1.5 m cable.

Both go into a cut recess, so decide before the top is drilled. The 2500 W rating on the hydraulic one is the number to check against whatever you intend to plug in. Both are in office essentials, with a 5-sheet strip-cut paper shredder at 12.000 KD.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an office chair cost in Kuwait?

From 12.450 KD for a stacking mid-back conference chair on chrome legs. A desk chair on castors with an adjustable gas lift starts at 19.500 KD, a high-back chair on a 300 mm nylon base is 28.000 KD, a conference chair on a chrome sled base is 42.450 KD, and a cashier chair that reaches counter height is 49.950 KD.

What seat height do I need for a 75 cm desk?

Every desk in our range is 75 cm to the top. A chair with a seat adjusting between 43 cm and 52 cm gives 23 to 32 cm of clearance under that top, and that is the range the adjustable chairs here cover. A fixed-height chair cannot be matched to a desk at all, which is why the stacking and sled-base chairs are meeting-room chairs.

What does a 120 kg rating on an office chair mean?

It is the maximum load the manufacturer states for the seat, gas lift and base together. On this range it is 120 kg on the 19.500 KD and 28.000 KD chairs and 150 kg on the 32.000 KD and 69.000 KD chairs. Three chairs state no rating at all, and we will not put a number on those — ask us to read the carton.

What is the footrest ring on a cashier chair for?

At a seat height that reaches a shop counter the feet do not reach the floor, so the chrome ring round the column takes them instead. On the 49.950 KD cashier chair the ring adjusts in height separately from the seat, and the chair's overall height runs 113 to 134 cm.

How much does an office desk cost in Kuwait?

13.950 KD for a 120 × 60 × 75 cm folding table desk rated to 80 kg on the top, 16.500 KD for a 100 × 50 × 75 cm folding writing desk on wheels, and 60.000 KD for a 1200 × 600 × 750 mm workstation with a 25 mm melamine top and a mobile drawer cabinet.

What is the difference between a stacking chair and a desk chair?

A gas lift and castors. A stacking chair has neither: it is one fixed height, it does not roll, and it stores several deep against a wall. A desk chair adjusts its seat height, swivels 360° and rolls, which is what one person at one desk needs and what a meeting room does not.

How wide is a three-seater reception sofa?

179 cm wide, 72 cm deep and 84 cm high, at 45.000 KD. The matching armchair is 68 cm wide to the same depth and height at 28.000 KD, so two armchairs side by side take 136 cm of wall. Two armchairs and the sofa together are 96.000 KD as a set.

Which office chair should I buy for gaming in Kuwait?

The 21.500 KD gaming chair with a footrest is listed in red, black, blue and pink on a steel frame with 360° wheels, and no weight rating is recorded for it. If you want figures instead of a shape, the 19.500 KD mesh chair states a 43–52 cm seat height, a 120 kg rating and 3D-adjustable armrests, and the 69.000 KD full-mesh chair states a 135° recline and a four-level backrest height.
