Picking the width

A narrow blade concentrates your push into a small area, so 30 mm and 40 mm are what lift a stubborn spot, work into a corner or clean out a window rebate. A wide blade covers ground and leaves fewer ridges, so 80 mm and 100 mm are for stripping a whole wall of wallpaper or taking flaking paint off a large flat surface. Most people end up with a narrow one and a wide one rather than a single middle size. For filling and smoothing rather than stripping, a flexible filling knife is a different tool: ask at the counter.

Keeping the edge

These are tool-steel blades. Running one along a plastered wall at too steep an angle digs in and gouges the surface; keep the blade shallow and let the width do the work. A blade that has picked up a burr from hitting a nail head will leave a score line down the wall from then on, so dress the edge flat before you carry on. Masking tape protects the edges you do not want touched.

Is the blade replaceable?

Not recorded. These are fixed-blade scrapers as far as the product record goes, so do not plan on swapping blades.

What is a two-component handle?

A handle moulded from two materials, usually a hard core with a softer grip over it. The record names it but does not say which materials.

Can I use one on wood?

The record describes a wall scraper, for wallpaper and paint. On wood a scraper used too hard will tear the grain, so work with the grain and keep the angle shallow.
