Picking a length

A 30 cm rule lives in a toolbox or a drawer and covers most marking out. A 60 cm rule is the one that gets used for cabinet parts and tile cuts, because it spans a standard worktop depth in one go. The 1 metre rule is for sheet goods: marking a full-width cut across a board without moving the rule, which is where the error creeps in. If you are measuring rooms or runs longer than a metre, a measuring tape or a laser distance meter is the right tool.

Can I use one as a cutting guide?

That is one of the two uses in the record, along with measuring. Hold the rule down firmly and run the knife along the edge, and keep your fingers behind the blade line. Blades are in utility knives.

Are these rigid or flexible?

Is the 1 metre rule the same thickness as the 30 cm?

Not recorded. On a 1 metre rule the thickness is what stops it flexing in the middle, so look at it in person if that matters for your work.
