Which size

The longer the spanner, the more leverage it gives and the wider the jaw opens. 8 inch lives in a kitchen drawer or a car and handles plumbing nuts and small bolts. 10 inch is the general-purpose size most people should buy first. 12 inch is for large nuts and anything seized — the extra length is the whole point of it.

What to check before buying

An adjustable spanner is a convenience tool, not a replacement for the right size. On a tight or already-rounded nut, a socket or a ring spanner grips all six faces and is far less likely to slip — see socket sets and ratchets. When you do use this one, close the jaw tight against the nut and pull towards the movable jaw.
