Buying tips

  • Straight or curved? A circular saw is for long straight cuts; a jigsaw is for curves and cut-outs. A miter saw is worth it once you are cutting the same angle over and over.
  • Metal and tile: use a cut-off machine for steel bar and pipe, and a marble cutting machine with a diamond blade for tile and stone. Don't put a wood blade on either.
  • Blade first, machine second: most poor cuts are a blunt or wrong blade. Blades are in cutting tools.
  • Cordless: check whether batteries are included before comparing prices.

Which saw cuts wood best?

For straight cuts across boards and timber, a circular saw. For curves, shapes and cut-outs, a jigsaw. For picture frames, skirting and repeat angles, a miter saw.

Can I cut metal with a circular saw?

Not with a wood blade. For steel bar, pipe and angle, use a 14in cut-off machine, or an angle grinder with a metal cutting disc for smaller jobs.
