Which ladder size do you need? A Kuwait buying guide

Mohammed Nazir |

Almost everyone who buys a ladder buys the wrong size once. Either it is too short, so you end up on the top step reaching, or it is so tall that it lives in the way and you borrow a chair instead. Our ladders run from 6.750 KD to 37 KD, and the price is almost entirely a function of how high you need to go and how the ladder folds away afterwards.

So start with the height, not the price. Here is how to work it out, and which of our ladders matches each answer.

First, work out the height you actually need

Go to the job you bought the ladder for and measure it. Three heights cover most of what people in Kuwait buy a ladder for:

  • Up to about 2 metres — changing a bulb, the top of a wardrobe, kitchen cupboards, curtain rails in a flat. A small step ladder is enough and anything bigger is a storage problem.
  • 2 to 3.5 metres — ceiling fixtures in a villa, split AC units, the top of a storeroom rack, painting a stairwell. This is where a multi-purpose or telescopic ladder earns its money.
  • Above 3.5 metres — external walls, high ceilings, signage, maintenance work. You want a long multi-purpose ladder, and you want it to fold small, because it will not stand in a cupboard.

One habit that saves buying twice: stand where you will be working and reach up. Most people can work comfortably a little above where their hands reach from the step, so you do not need a ladder as tall as the ceiling. You do need a ladder tall enough that you are never standing on its top step.

Step ladders: 6.750 and 9.950 KD

This is the ladder most households should buy, and the one most households skip. The steel step ladder comes in a 2-step at 6.750 KD and a 4-step at 9.950 KD, both in stock. It is a self-supporting A-frame, which means it does not need a wall to lean on — important in the middle of a room, or on a tiled floor where leaning a straight ladder is a bad idea.

The 2-step is the one to keep in the kitchen or the store cupboard for everyday reach. The 4-step is the better all-rounder for a flat: curtain rails, the top of a tall wardrobe, a ceiling light. The 3-step and 5-step versions of the same ladder are between shipments right now, so if one of those is specifically what you want, message us rather than ordering around it.

Multi-purpose aluminium ladders: 20.950 and 23.950 KD

"Multi-purpose" means the ladder reconfigures: it folds into an A-frame for free-standing work, or opens out long to lean against a wall. For anyone doing maintenance on a villa, that flexibility is the whole point, because one ladder covers both the ceiling fan and the outside wall.

The 12-step model is 3.7 m at full length and costs 20.950 KD, with anti-slip steps and an aluminium frame light enough for one person to carry. The 16-step version at 23.950 KD is the same format with more steps; its length is not published, so ask us for it before you buy if the exact reach matters to your job.

Aluminium versus steel is mostly a weight question. Steel step ladders are compact and sit where you put them. An aluminium ladder of this length is the one you carry upstairs, onto a roof or into a car, and the weight saving is what makes that possible on your own.

The telescopic ladder: 20.500 KD

A telescopic ladder extends to 3.2 m and collapses down to a fraction of that, which makes it the answer when your problem is not the climbing but the storing. If you live in an apartment with no balcony store, or you are a technician who moves between jobs in a saloon car, this is the format to look at. We have only a couple on the floor, so check with us before you make the trip.

The 24-step foldable: 37 KD

At 37.000 KD the 24-step foldable aluminium ladder is the longest reach we stock, and the only ladder in the range with a published load rating: it supports up to 130 kg. It has wide spreader bars and square rungs, which is what makes a long ladder feel steady rather than springy, and it adjusts so that it can be set up on a staircase — the situation where most ladders become unusable and people start improvising.

It also folds into a compact storage mode that fits in a car. If you are buying for a building, a shop fit-out or regular maintenance work, this is the practical choice, and 30 units are in stock.

Note that 130 kg is the only capacity figure published across the whole range. For the other models we would rather you ask than assume: tell us your weight plus the tools you will be carrying, and we will tell you which ladders in stock are suitable.

What is not available right now

Two things worth knowing so you are not searching for them:

  • The 20-step multi-purpose aluminium ladder at 5.7 m (26.950 KD) is between shipments.
  • The plain aluminium step ladder in 3- to 9-step sizes (8.500–14.800 KD) is out of stock across all sizes.

If one of those is what you came for, message us and we will tell you where the shipment stands rather than letting you watch the page.

Using a ladder safely

None of this is complicated, and all of it is the reason people fall off ladders:

  • Set it on level, dry ground. Wet tiles and sand are the two surfaces that catch people out here.
  • Lock an A-frame fully open. The spreader bars should be straight and locked before any weight goes on.
  • Keep your hips between the rails. If you have to lean out past the side of the ladder, come down and move it. Reaching sideways is what tips a ladder, not height.
  • Do not stand on the top step. Buy one size up instead; the difference between our sizes is a few dinars.
  • Carry tools, not armfuls. Keep one hand for the ladder. A tool belt or a bucket on a hook beats a second trip with both hands full.
  • Check it before you climb. Loose rivets, a bent rung, a missing foot — look once before you trust it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest ladder you sell?

The 2-step steel step ladder at 6.750 KD, in stock. The 4-step version of the same ladder is 9.950 KD.

Which ladder size do I need for a normal ceiling?

For a bulb or a ceiling fixture in a flat, a 4-step step ladder at 9.950 KD is usually enough. For a villa with higher ceilings, or for AC units, look at the 12-step multi-purpose ladder at 20.950 KD, which opens to 3.7 m.

What is the difference between a step ladder and a multi-purpose ladder?

A step ladder is a fixed A-frame that stands on its own and stays short. A multi-purpose ladder folds into an A-frame or extends long to lean against a wall, so one ladder covers both jobs — at more cost and more weight.

How much weight can your ladders hold?

The 24-step foldable aluminium ladder is rated to 130 kg. The other models do not publish a figure, so ask us with your weight and tools in mind and we will tell you what is suitable.

Which ladder is easiest to store in an apartment?

The telescopic ladder at 20.500 KD, which extends to 3.2 m and collapses to a short bundle. After that, the 2-step steel ladder at 6.750 KD, which slides behind a door.
